Jack sighed. Gwen cried and yelled, how about unfair the life was, that she need Rhys, but she knew how important she was, she knew that they need her. Jack frowned. She was important, yes, but not more than the others. He was lost in thoughts when he felt someone kissing him. And it wasn’t Ianto.
“What are you doing?” Gwen looked at him, an inane smile on her face.
“Oh! Jack! That was I ever wanted. You and me, always together!”
“I’m with Ianto!” Jack looked at her in disbelief.
“Oh, Jack, we all know he’s just a part-time shag. You always put me above him. You always wanted make me happy, even if it hurts Ianto. That means you’re in love with me! Not him!” Jack was surprised. He became angry.
“He’s not a part-time shag! When I was away, he was the one who keep my mind sane! I came back for him!”
“What do you think they believed when you told me that you need me? After the space-whale! Because, that what you said Jack ‘I need you Gwen!’ So don’t tell me now that it has nothing between us!”
“I was wrong! Very wrong! And I can see it now. Go home Gwen because I don’t want you here. And take few days for thinking about what do you want in your life, because you will never have me. Never.” Gwen looked at him, trying to say something but, seeing the anger in his face, she left. Now, all she could do, it was to repair the thing with Rhys. She needed to be nice and charming and in a few days, he would eat in her hand.
Jack looked Gwen leaving the Hub and sat in his chair loudly. He couldn’t believe that the things are gone so far! Looking in his memories, he could see that Gwen said was true. He gave Gwen preferential treatment but didn’t think too much about them. He thought that he made up for with the others members of his team. But, more he looked in his memories, more he saw that wasn’t true. He always chose Gwen over the others.
“I’m an idiot.” He said to anyone in particular. “I’m just an old idiot!” He looked around and saw that he was alone. “I wonder why…” he said ironically to himself. He used CCTV to follow his team. Ianto, he could see it, was furious. Jack knew that he would pay the bill for this stunt with Gwen. He hoped just he wasn’t too late. He could do everything for his beautiful Welshman. He will do anything for Ianto. Fear found its way to his heart when a TARDIS, and not the Doctor’s TARDIS, came on the screen. He saw Owen and Tosh joining them. And he saw them leave. Jack couldn’t breathe anymore, couldn’t think anymore, and couldn’t feel anymore, except the pain in his chest. Did Ianto feel like that when he left with the Doctor? Revenge is best served cold, they said. And it was true. He thought that they were over his little trip. That the things could be better. Well, that wasn’t the first time he was wrong. He opened the drawer of his desk and found Ianto’s shirt. The dark-red one. From the last time they made love. ‘More like shagged.’ It was primal. And, if before it could make a smug smile appear on his face, now he just could feel incomplete. He thought he was whole, happy and all that fluffy stuff when travelling with the Doctor and Rose but it was just a ghost of real happiness: someone who loved you, with your virtues and, above all, with your vices. And God, he knew that Ianto was stubborn, when he wanted something, he would do anything to get it. And for a reason he didn’t understand, Ianto wanted him.
Ianto’s perfume wrapped him and a memory popped up.
Ianto was breathless. He was beautiful. Jack looked at him, wanting to remember every inch of his beautiful Welshman.
“Jack… I… I…” Jack met Ianto’s look and after few second of an awkward silence, the young man rose and begun to get dressed. “I have works to do.” Jack smiled. Ianto was just too cute for his own good. He kissed him on the nose just before Ianto left.
Ianto had taken one of his shirts because he didn’t found his. Remembering, he asked to himself if Ianto would say ‘I love you.’ Just dreaming about Ianto saying these three little words to him made something flutter in his chest. He never wanted commitment. He found that totally stupid. How you can put yourself, your soul, your heart at the mercy of one people? But he understood now. He understood that put in the right hands; it could be the most incredible thing in the universe. And, now, he was sure that the right hands were Ianto’s. But Ianto left. He didn’t care about the tears which fell on his papers. He put his face on Ianto’s shirt, the same way Ianto did with his coat after Abbadon. He lost him. He knew how it felt to travel with a Time-Lord (or Time-Lady in this case), being a part of a greater thing. It was addictive, like a drug.
“Jack, what’s wrong?” The Captain rose so fast that Ianto wondered how he couldn’t break something. Jack hugged his lover almost roughly.
“You’re back! I’m sorry! Don’t leave me, please!” Ianto was worried now.
“Jack! I will never leave you. You saw us on CCTV, right?” Jack nodded, unable to talk. “Come on Jack. We can have this discussion on the couch.” Jack followed Ianto, quiet. Ianto explained that he was angry with Jack to not see through Gwen’s game. Naya, The Archivist, thought it was a good idea for them to leave a moment, before they done something stupid. Jack learned they were away for one month only, that Owen and Tosh were finally together. They visited Diadem first, then Owen wanted to see Ancient Roma, Tosh wanted to see America before the Colonization and Ianto wanted to find a friend for Myfanwy. At this moment, they heard two cries and Jack looked at Myfanwy and his companion.
“What his name?”
“Do you think we’ll have little birdies?” Ianto smiled.
“I hope so.”
“Why don’t you stay with Naya? I mean, surely, it was fun to travel with her?” Ianto muttered something and looked at his hands. “I didn’t hear what you said.”
“I said I missed you. It was nice but I will prefer to travel with you.”
“I don’t deserve you.” Jack said.
“I betrayed you so many times, Jack. I think it’s the other way. I don’t deserve you. But I will do anything for you. Because I don’t want to lose you.”
“Same here, even if I screw up things most of time.” Jack felt reassured and kissed his lover.
“Come on, I have few gifts for you. It’ll better if we are in your room for some of them.” Jack follow him like a happy puppy and Ianto laught.
